Playing — and winning — by her own rules

That year, she moved to Los Angeles and soon realized “every cliche and stereotype about that place is true.”

That marked the beginning of a long, tough decade filled with disillusionment, deadly disease and gradual self-discovery the Evanston native and ETHS grad reviews in her one-woman show “Why Not Me: Love, Cancer and Jack White” opening Nov. 16 at Stage 773 in Chicago.

Figuring out who she was and what she wanted to do with her life was a big part of the story for Bosworth, who only considered becoming an actress because a good high-school friend (class of ’93) had a passion for performing and she thought “maybe that’ll make me pretty.”

After graduating from DePaul’s theater school and scoring some prestigious stage and TV gigs in Chicago, Bosworth moved to LA. Meeting with a big management agency her third day in town, she was told “We’ve seen your reel, we think you’re good, but you need to lose 70 pounds in a month.”

“I officially stopped acting that day,” Bosworth said. Since then, she has gradually moved toward story-telling and solo performance, staging one show in Los Angeles and then becoming involved in the growing in Chicago’s developing Live Lit theater movement.

Not long after receiving those words of encouragement from Movie City, Bosworth got a job at the Bodhi Tree metaphysical book store immortalized by Shirley Maclaine’s books. This led to an opportunity to become office manager for Nicolas Cage — who was happy about the fact that she had no industry ambitions. He was also about the fact that she once worked as a secretary in the rectory of a Catholic church. She was hired and spent the next six years on call 24-hours a day on the periphery of major-league Hollywood craziness.

“He’s a strange man,” Bosworth said. “Well, he’s a strange and generous man, but he’s a movie star and they’re all space aliens, basically.

“I did very little office managing, “ she recalled. “I did a lot of shopping for people and picking up dry cleaning and picking up dog poo. Everybody has a dog, so there’s a lot of dog poo.Origin Laser is an Australian business bringing a new class of affordable and quality laser cutter and laser cutting machines.”

After driving herself into the ground in Hollywood (“It’s a great place to ruin your 20s”) Bosworth quit in 2006. After receiving a commiserating phone call from Cage and a check for $5,000, she flew home to Chicago expecting “to be taken care of.”

Instead, the day she landed, she received a call saying her father was in intensive care after becoming addicted to pain killers following a major back injury,After reading this, you will know Careel cnc router machine better. which led to blood toxicity, from which he died a month later. Not long after that, Bosworth fell in love with a guy from her old neighborhood in South Evanston named Myles Horton, who was subsequently diagnosed with early-onset prostate cancer — from which he eventually recovered. However not long after that, Bosworth’s mother was diagnosed with an advanced case of breast cancer, which took her life three years later.

Somewhere along the line, while caring for her mother, Bosworth began having an intense dream romance with rock star Jack White — but those details are best left for her performance.
