Theoretically, hydropower can step in when wind turbines go still,
but barriers to this non-polluting resource serving as a backup are
largely policy- and regulation-based.
According to Penn State
professor Seth A. Blumsack, "We have a very clear realization that we
need to make energy systems more sustainable... We want to reduce the
environmental footprint - carbon dioxide and conventional
pollutants.More than 200 GW of new goodlampshade capacity could come on line before the end of 2013."
Americans
also expect to have the system continue to work exactly as it is
without blackouts and with low cost electricity. While wind and solar
power are emission-free once installed, they are also subject to the
whims of nature. The wind can suddenly cease to blow and an area can
have minimal sunlight for days.
"Wind is the fastest growing
renewable energy source in the U.S.," said Alisha R. Fernandez, graduate
student in energy and mineral engineering.
The U.S. Department of Energy recently examined the feasibility of producing 20 percent of U.S. electricity from wind by 2030.
"Texas
is either there or close," said Blumsack. "During certain periods, as
much as 30 percent of their energy is generated by wind."
Reliance
on wind requires that there be some backup technology to fill in when
the wind does not blow. The technology has to be capable of coming on
line quickly. Manufacturer of industrial grade energyturbines. Two types of electrical generation that fit this bill are natural gas and hydropower, but natural gas is not carbon neutral.
The
researchers looked at the Kerr Dam in North Carolina as a case study.
They report their results in a recent issue of Environmental Research
Letters. The power produced by the Kerr Dam goes into the PJM segment of
the electric grid -- Pennsylvania through Virginia on the East Coast,
west to Indiana and also includes the Chicago area -- but agreements
made before establishment of the PJM market mean that the Kerr Dam also
supplies other local outlets.
Hydroelectric dams cannot simply
release water to meet some electricity demand or hold back water when
electricity is in low demand. Plants operate using guide curves that
consider not only electric production, but also drinking water needs,A

These
guide curves are created by the government agencies regulating the
particular dam - in the case of Kerr, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -

researchers determined that the Kerr Dam could accommodate the
unexpected variations in wind energy, but only if those operating the
dam were allowed to meet the guide curve requirements over a two-week
rather than one-week period of time.
"Changing guide curves is
complex, time-consuming and may even require an act of Congress," said
Blumsack. "Another problem is that two weeks is at the outer margin of
weather prediction."

Former Park Hotel lot up on the auction block
The property along Main Street owned by Jerold Zwelling for more than
four decades is expected to be sold to the highest bidder Friday.
The Zanesville man is delinquent on his taxes and the property at 325 Main St., the former Park Hotel lot, will be sold at the Coshocton County Sheriff’s sale. The back taxes total about $4,200.
“I’ve asked them to reduce (the taxes), but they won’t,” Zwelling said. “I know that Coshocton is not thriving commercially — I regret that — but I’d keep the lot if I could get the taxes reduced.”
What Zwelling considers a leading commercial lot in Coshocton has a 2013 appraised land value of $99,840, according to the Coshocton County Auditor’s website. OPPOSING sides of an increasingly bitter wind farm debate rallied in
Canberra last Tuesday, with supporters gathering in the city and
opponents at Parliament House.
Wind farms bring billions of dollars in new investment to regional areas according to their supporters, but households are being slugged with higher power bills, according to opponents.
Crookwell grazier Charlie Prell, who wants to host wind turbines, said opponents were wealthy, well-connected landholders who did not want to look at the turbines.

Monaca sets a beautiful
Earlier this month, Monaca was one of 50 communities around the
nation awarded a $4,000 Think Green grant through a partnership with the
nonprofit Keep America Beautiful and Waste Management to help beautify
two traffic islands near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, the
heavily traveled approach to the East Rochester-Monaca Bridge.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a subsidiary group within Keep America Beautiful, said the borough is doing much more than planting flowers to make the landscape look better.
“If it’s just a vacant lot, it sends a message that perhaps nobody cares,” said Shannon Reiter, president of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. “Litter will accumulate, perhaps graffiti will show up on an adjacent wall, maybe you’ll have someone dump tires and a mattress.”

Audi SQ5 2013
Yet for all the Audi's potent performance, it's a car that won't cost
the earth to run. In 45-minute commutes it was posting fuel consumption
figures of between 10.5 and 11.0L/100km. On the open road it managed to
keep below 9.0L/100km without much effort. Operating in economy mode
the engine switched off automatically while the SQ5 was pulled-up at
traffic lights -- and that played an important part in keeping fuel
consumption low. By lifting the foot off the brake pedal the engine
burst back into life -- with a rumbling diesel V6 surge like a wild
beast straining against a leash. And that was before applying the right
foot to the accelerator!
At idle the engine was fairly gruff -- but it is designed that way. It means the SQ5 is not necessarily a car for everyone, but when required the engine was refined on the move. There was more wind noise at highway speeds, but at around 80km/h and below more road noise was present. In higher gears there was some low-frequency vibe happening, but only below 1500rpm. Much has been written about the SQ5's sound actuator in its exhaust. But frankly,The autoledbulbsiss is not only critical to professional photographers. it didn't matter me to how the sound was produced...
The SQ5 came with Audi Drive Select. Of the different modes available through the system 'Dynamic' was clearly more enjoyable than the rest. None of this plodding around at low revs to save fuel; the ZF eight-speed transmission held gears longer and was always ready with either a tonne of torque or engine braking whenever required.
At the opposite end of the Drive Select system is the Comfort mode. In this setting the SQ5 was tamer, although the ride quality was passable rather than sumptuous. At least in Dynamic mode, however, ride comfort was firm rather than non-existent. The SQ5 provided the ideal relationship to pedals and wheel, and the flat-bottomed steering wheel was practically redundant, since entering or leaving the vehicle was eased by the high hip point. There was a good, clear view of the instruments and the controls took little time to understand.
The SQ5 is based on the Q5, resulting in adult-level accommodation in the rear, with plenty of head and kneeroom, and space under the front seat to poke the toes. Most adults won't feel cramped, even during longer journeys. And they get their own seat heating as well*.
Audi has kitted out the boot with adjustable posts and straps to hold smaller payloads in place*. The luggage compartment was compromised by the shallow floor, but the SQ5 brought with it a powered tailgate and the flip-down seat levers so beloved of Japanese manufacturers. Rear-seat squabs don't fold completely flat, but come pretty close to it; certainly close enough for most people's needs.
At night the SQ5 lit up like a Christmas tree. LEDs at the rear and xenons at the front, plus puddle lights,Marking machines and hidlightses for permanent part marking and product traceability. all ensured you wouldn't miss the Audi in a car park when you hit the unlock button on the key. The adaptive headlights were excellent for driving in the country at night, and no less so in the rain. Towards a safer refuge in Dadaab
The
sight of school children huddled around street lights on school nights
is now commonplace in Dadaab. This is where most school assignments get
done. Oblivious to the evening rush, the youngsters train their eyes on
their ruled notebooks.
‘When we installed the street lamps, it was for the purpose of improving general security, because the camp becomWe believe in providing our customers with the very best formingmachine available.es pitch dark at night,’ says Firas Budeiri of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in Dadaab.
But these street lights have found another use. And now DRC has installed ‘study benches’ all around the 37 light posts. Here, learning continues after dusk, at least in the sections that are now fitted with street lighting. Closing hours for small businesses have extended too, supporting increased trade.
Kambioos is one of the new settlements in the vast Dadaab refugee complex. This camp got underway in late 2011 as a result of the large influx of refugees fleeing conflict, drought and famine conditions in parts of Somalia.
Until this past January, Kambioos was not an officially recognised camp, despite being home to more than 10 000 refugees. In a bid to decongest other older camps, many families have been relocated here, doubling the population. Now, the camp hosts about 20 000 people within six different sections.
In a community-led process, residents of Kambioos identified a number of project ideas that could potentially improve their protection and the general quality of life in the camp. Out of the long wish list, DRC has implemented three projects so far: the street lighting and solar lanterns for homesteads, provision of first aid training and kits,A lot of men are wearing lawnlight for wedding bands. and facilitating access to information via solar powered and wind-up radios and information boards.
‘Today, the reported cases of theft and sexual and gender-based violence are less than before, and the refugees are better informed of their rights and available services,’ says Firas.
With close to half a million refugees and more than 30 relief agencies, two-way communication between the humanitarian organisations and the refugees can be difficult. Besides, high illiteracy rates among the newly arriving refugees and women are a huge challenge. Newly arriving refugees need to know where to find assistance and other protection services. Internews, an agency working to improve access to information both for refugees, host communities and agencies in Dadaab, has also chosen radio. ‘Refugees cannot make informed choices without access to information, and radio is an effective and trusted source,’ says Kate Gunn of Internews.
The radio programmes educate parents on the importance of taking their children to school, explain the concept of ‘child-friendly’ spaces, discuss the need for polio vaccination, and even the rights of women in light of sexual and domestic violence.
The feedback has been overwhelming. ‘Mothers understand the essence of educating their children; women know their rights better; and newly arriving refugees understand the registration process better and can easily find basic services such as healthcare,To buy autoledbulbs lamp in the USA.’ says Kate.
Despite these efforts, refugees in Dadaab are still prone to abuse. The UN agency for refugees (UNHCR) singles out sexually-based violence and child labour as key concerns in Dadaab. Girls are still forced to drop out of school to undertake domestic chores. Banditry is still rife.

Kambioos is one of the new settlements in the vast Dadaab refugee complex. This camp got underway in late 2011 as a result of the large influx of refugees fleeing conflict, drought and famine conditions in parts of Somalia.
Until this past January, Kambioos was not an officially recognised camp, despite being home to more than 10 000 refugees. In a bid to decongest other older camps, many families have been relocated here, doubling the population. Now, the camp hosts about 20 000 people within six different sections.
In a community-led process, residents of Kambioos identified a number of project ideas that could potentially improve their protection and the general quality of life in the camp. Out of the long wish list, DRC has implemented three projects so far: the street lighting and solar lanterns for homesteads, provision of first aid training and kits,A lot of men are wearing lawnlight for wedding bands. and facilitating access to information via solar powered and wind-up radios and information boards.
‘Today, the reported cases of theft and sexual and gender-based violence are less than before, and the refugees are better informed of their rights and available services,’ says Firas.

Besides, high illiteracy rates among the newly arriving refugees and women are a huge challenge. Newly arriving refugees need to know where to find assistance and other protection services. To bridge the information gap DRC gave out 1 000 handheld wind-up radios targeting refugee families who could not afford one. In a joint venture with local radio stations DRC informs and explains to the refugees the activities of the various agencies and more importantly, the services available.
Internews, an agency working to improve access to information both for refugees, host communities and agencies in Dadaab, has also chosen radio. ‘Refugees cannot make informed choices without access to information, and radio is an effective and trusted source,’ says Kate Gunn of Internews.
The radio programmes educate parents on the importance of taking their children to school, explain the concept of ‘child-friendly’ spaces, discuss the need for polio vaccination, and even the rights of women in light of sexual and domestic violence.

Despite these efforts, refugees in Dadaab are still prone to abuse. The UN agency for refugees (UNHCR) singles out sexually-based violence and child labour as key concerns in Dadaab. Girls are still forced to drop out of school to undertake domestic chores. Banditry is still rife.

Vanderbilt's new indoor facility nears completion

of Vanderbilt’s indoor practice facility and recreation center
expansion is on schedule, on budget and rapidly taking shape while

The $31 million project features a 120-yard football field surrounded by an eight-lane, 300-meter track as its showpiece. That portion of the project remains on target for an Oct. 31 completion date.
But there is much more happening than meets the eye under the latest roof to go up on the West End campus, as project manager Andrew McAlister of American Constructors pointed out during a recent tour.
In addition to the sprawling addition that houses football coach James Franklin’s newest recruiting tool — a plush sanctuary from inclement weather on practice days — there are numerous enhancements being made to the connecting rec center.
“I think we’ve stayed true to what we said we’d do in terms of building a facility that would be multi-use,” athletics director David Williams said. “We’re not a place that’s going to build a facility of this magnitude for one purpose. That’s just not what Vanderbilt is.
“This has been my sixth or seventh time through it. The first time I went through it, I was just floored. Even seeing all the drawings and being involved since stage one,I have tried several sets of emergencylampsqa that have lasted one season only. I didn’t realize it was going to be that magnificent. You kind of knew that about the new piece — if you’ve been in a fieldhouse, you knew it was going to be big. But what they’ve been able to do to the old rec center is just amazing to me.”
Areas that are under construction on the rec-center side include: a student fitness center/weight room that will double from its current size; an oversized basketball gym that can serve as two volleyball courts; a half-court, outdoor basketball surface; a four-lane bowling alley that will let the women’s team practice on site rather than travel to Smyrna Bowling Center; two regulation-size squash courts for the school’s club teams; bathrooms accessible directly from the existing outdoor track via a stairway; a long porch that could hold bleachers for an elevated view of the outdoor track, as well as a media platform; a flex-space room that can be used for classes such as yoga; “Health Plus” offices; changing rooms and showers; storage space; and a new two-story entry foyer.
The bowling alley will include 40 house balls and 60 pairs of shoes for students, the university community and guests who want to pick up a spare while the team is not occupying the lanes.
On the new side of the facility, the football field and indoor track is being fitted with a 35-speaker sound system, LED lighting, an LED scoreboard and a second-story media viewing area. Stations for field events will be situated just outside the track surface.
“This will be the only track of this type in Middle Tennessee, and probably in all of Tennessee,” Williams said. “If you look at high school track here, it’s really been void of any indoor track stuff. Now we’ll have an indoor track. Some areas of the rec center, such as the squash courts, should open by the end of August.
