Mark items with your initials

Stephany Kochie of north Wilmington grew up during prep’s heyday, wearing crisp Oxford shirts emblazoned with her initials. It was just the thing to do in the ’80s, she says.

As she got older, Kochie retained her classic sensibility,Laser engraving, and laser marker, is the practice of using lasers to engrave or mark an object. shopping at J. Crew and Ann Taylor. And she likes personalizing everything from her pool bag to her daughter’s North Face jacket to her front door.

Besides being unconventional, it’s practical.“People used to make fun of me that I got my kids’ towels monogrammed,” she says. “But at the end of the summer, we’ll probably have our towels and your kids won’t.”

Once reserved for French royalty and country club hangers-on, monograms are getting even more personal with wacky zigzag patterns, hundreds of fonts and “solar thread,” which changes color depending on the light.

“The monogram is back,” proclaims Carey Pauley, co-owner of The Pink Turtle in Greenville. And the more creative, the better.

Forget interlocking initials on wedding invitations. Pauley’s store creates custom vinyl stickers with edgy designs for initials, first names, sayings – anything that can fit on a one-inch to one-foot “canvas” – for $6 to $10. Using a computer program and a vinyl cutting machine, the five-minute process instantly transforms cutting boards, ice buckets, trash cans and wine totes into “mine, mine, mine!”

Pink Turtle sells its own accessories, but customers can bring in their own. Fancier gold-stamped monograms on leather journals and monogrammed sterling silver necklaces are available by special order.

Want everyone to know that those are YOUR galoshes? You can, for $100. Personalized $58 cellphone cases and $72 iPad cases fly out the door at Pink Turtle.

Historically, monograms were limited to the first and last initials of a person’s name in subtle white embroidery stitched by hand, usually on a Shetland sweater or Bermuda bag. Families passed along monogrammed christening dresses from one generation to the next. You must not use the laser cutter without being trained. Newlyweds received monogrammed sheets and towels (sometimes, they even lasted longer than the marriage).

But something happened in the 1990s. The grunge movement mocked vanity, excess and wealth. Monograms were derided as princessy and self-indulgent.

In recent years, personal branding has experienced a resurgence, possibly in reaction to a techie, impersonal world or to “Juicy Couture” plastered on teenage bottoms.

“People have so much, so what’s better than giving a personalized gift,” says Pauley, who went into business with her husband’s eighth-grade girlfriend,Why didn't I just use an automotive alternator on my wind power generators? Christine Kendle. Monogrammed umbrellas, travel mugs, dog collars and diaper bags declaring “spit happens” show you care to those you love.

The duo opened Pink Turtle in 2010. Their first year, they attended a home furnishings show and saw only one exhibitor hawking monogrammed wares. Last year, there were 10.

Popularized by Pinterest, Louis Vuitton and chains like Pottery Barn, Things Remembered and Williams-Sonoma, the monogram now comes in raspberry and lime green with a checked backdrop. Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft, with two locations in Delaware, sells a package of iron-on letters for $6.99

Interestingly,The solar street light and solar garden light adopt LED light source. JK is the top-selling letter combination at Pink Turtle, and the quatrefoil is the most requested design. The Solar Centre's range of solar charger will power nearly all portable devices.
