Transparent and translucent ceramics are on the verge of being put to
industrial use as new optical materials that offer great potential.
As
part of the publicly funded research project OptokeraMat, Schott
Research and Development has laid foundations on manufacturing them in a
reproducible manner.
At first glance, they remind us of glass
lenses or color filters. Nevertheless, their potential lies in these
transparent or milky-yellowish platelets made of ceramic.Learn more

“We
have now succeeded in meeting the long-held wishes of the optical
industry for a new transparent material for use in photography and other
types of imaging devices. And we are paving the way for
highly-efficient LED systems,” says Dr. Yvonne Menke, Materials
Development Manager for Schott Research and Development.
The
technology group has succeeded in reproducibly manufacturing ceramic
sintered parts for optical and fluorescent applications within the
framework of the three-and-a-half year joint research project
OptokeraMat funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research (BMBF) that
just came to an end in March.

thermal and mechanical qualities, but also high optical refractive

as translucent, in other words semi-transparent, materials for colour
conversion.
Colour conversion is the foundation of all white LED
light sources, which are actually blue LEDs coated by a luminescent
material.
This material is usually bound inside silicone, and
therefore not nearly as heat resistant as a fluorescent ceramic
manufactured at temperatures in excess of 1600°C.
In combination
with high-intensity LEDs or laser diodes, the outstanding temperature
stability and thermal conductivity of these ceramic converters allow for
new light sources to be developed.
Their luminance is 2 to 3
times higher than that of a typical xenon burner. Areas of application
include beamers, next-generation digital projectors and headlights, for
example.
The versatile properties of the ceramics can be custom designed or optimised using a multistep manufacturing process at Schott.
This
has made it possible to industrially manufacture transparent and
translucent ceramics with diameters of between 30 and 50 millimeters.
Initial sampling by partners and potential customers is already
underway.

Jury considers verdict in trial tied
A federal jury will return to deliberations Monday in the case of a
former Crestwood Water Department supervisor accused of repeatedly lying
about the secret use of a community well contaminated with toxic
chemicals.
The jury deliberated through the afternoon Friday after Neubauer chose not to testify and her attorney, Thomas Breen, opted not to call any witnesses.
In his closing statement in U.S. District Court, Breen described Crestwood as a "town that betrayed its citizens" but said Neubauer was a low-level clerk forced to "wear the jacket" for former Mayor Chester Stranczek and other top Crestwood officials who used the well to avoid the cost of fixing leaky water mains.
Federal prosecutors focused their case on reports required under federal and state law to track municipal water use and assure residents their drinking water is safe. employers continue to value the wide-ranging skills of these workers,
according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Many seeking a career in machining technology are now opting for more formal education and training, giving them the competitive edge they need to become desirable job candidates in this industry.
Many Houston-area colleges and universities have developed programs and curriculum to better equip machining technology students.
Lone Star College's machining technology program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in the operation and programming of computer numeric control (CNC) mills and lathes used extensively in the manufacturing industries.
"Topics within the certificate program include blueprint reading, manufacturing materials and processes, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and extensive hands-on setup, operation and programming of CNC mills and lathes," Head said. "Our instruction is primarily offered in hands-on labs that are flexible for the instructor. Employers want our students to have had many hours on the equipment - not lecture hours, but working on actual equipment."
These employers, Head said, are reaching out to college programs to find students with this hands-on experience and the formal training. Head herself experienced the tremendous employer demand for machinists in the Gulf Coast region.

Arcade-y Game That Lacks Depth
There's not a really tidy way to categorize Chillingo's Madmonster. It's not a runner, even though it does task you with guiding a tiny monster dude around a world from left to right in an endless charge. It's not a platform game, even though its core mechanic revolves around that monster bouncing up and down and smashing various objects. It's a game that sits in the middle between these two genres, satisfying neither's conditions as neatly as I want it to. And while I'm being wishy-washy: it's not a thrilling game, either, though it is a competent arcade-y game.
To rewind: In Madmonster, you control a brown-ish, pink fuzz ball with some nasty looking teeth in an overall quest to destroy everything in its path. By tapping on either the left or the right side of the screen, you plough this furry ball of death into anything that gets in its way. Curiously,If you're looking for a fun and memorable way to impress, you'll want to consider make your own bobblehead. whenever you make contact with an object -- be it tank,We're making Book scanner and digitization accessible to everyone. bomb or even satellite dish -- the monster bounces off of it and then goes airborne. The more junk you run into as you're flying through the air, the higher you go. If you get high enough, you hit outer space, instantly reminding you that, yes, this is a video game.

You can buy power-ups, upgrades for your ball, decorations, new monsters, and consumable items from it with coins, which can be grabbed in levels or obtained via an in-app purchase. I really don't want to spend an hour talking about this, so I won't. I'll just leave it at this: my initial impression is that this game is pretty aggressive with its store, which is baffling since, you know, the game cost money and all.
If you just like flipping out your phone and doing something mindless, this might just be up your alley. The GE RightHeight Design frontload washer and dryer incorporate the industry's largest openings and the first built-in riser to minimize strenuous bends and long reaches, no matter what the user's height.
Approximately 59% of consumers purchase a washer based on its opening and how easy it is to access, according to research from The Stevenson Company. Appliance makers recommend that users purchase pedestals to raise the height of washers and dryers, but some 60% of consumers forgo this added expense.
