There's a new toy at my desk that a certain 20-something in the
office wants to play with. Press a button, and a voice familiar to many
rings out in an amplified sing-song: "I have blueberries, I have
peaches. I have plums. I have the mango."
It's Mr. Okra In Your
Pocket, the latest In Your Pocket talking keychain novelty from the New
Orleans company that also makes "Cajun in Your Pocket" and the "Da Mayor
in Your Pocket" device featuring select parts of former mayor Ray
Nagin's radio rant after Hurricane Katrina.
Steve Winn, who
founded Cajun In Your Pocket "17 or 18 years ago," said that Mr. Okra is
a friend of his and several people had suggested he would be a good fit
for the keychain recording. "We took him in the studio, gave him some
money, and he gets a percentage.
"He's a great guy. He's really a
smart businessman," Winn said of Mr. Okra. (His best-seller is Mr. T in
Your Pocket; he has Rambo, Scarface, Mr. Rogers, Stewie from "Family
Guy" and more In Your Pockets as well.)
The latest has six
chants and sayings from the man thought to be New Orleans' last street
peddler, Arthur Robinson. In his colorfully painted truck, Robinson
drives his routes six days a week, stopping and selling fresh fruits and

Keeping your car dry and clean
Do you plan weeks ahead if you want to get your car washed? Does the inconvenience of going out your way and spending an hour waiting for the car to get hosed down make you postpone the trip? Well, what if you could just drive in for a movie or a meal and have a shiny polished car by the time you were done? Dry Wash is your answer. And to top it all, it’s an eco friendly, zero-water process that doesn’t leave a messy slushy aftermath.
Started two years ago, Dry Wash claims to be the only service in India that uses no water at all to clean cars. A franchise of the Brazilian company by the same name, the facility uses a special organic compound that literally wipes clean the grimy surface. Currently run by Jeremy Brian, a multi-tasking entrepreneur and pastor, the car cleaning service can handle about four cars at a time and cleans an average seven cars in a day.Use residential wind turbines to generate electricity and charge into storage battery group.
“The service was started by my father for a friend of his. But things didn’t work out and I happened to just come back from Australia after my studies.An industrial washing machine can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items. I took up the challenge and took over the business,” begins the 32-year old. Focusing his energies on the service, what was averaging about 50 cars a month turned into a more vibrant business of about 140 cars a month.
Under the wing of Partners Worldwide, a global enterprise headquartered at Michigan, USA, the service run by Novabossa, a Hyderabad based company, sources its products from the original company in Brazil. “They give us the cleaning agents and support us as required, but Dry Wash is an independent franchise that operates here,” he informs.
The cleaning process takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. The cleaning compound, Carnauba wax, is a made from plant extract and is completely organic. Explaining the science, Jeremy says, “Dirt has negative charge and the wax has positive charge. So when you wipe the car with the compound, it attracts the dirt. It doesn’t even require brushing or scrubbing, you just need to wipe the surface.” Once the dirt is cleaned off, a polishing coat is used.
“Depending on which part of the car we’re cleaning, we use different cleaning agents. We have a hi-tech cleaner that removes stains from the car seats, multi-purpose cleaner for the plastic parts, cleaning gels for the tyres and so on.The units can be used as conventional washer extractor for all kinds of work.” Besides wiping down the car clean, the service also vacuums the interiors.Paper Folding machine work well in a variety of settings.
Dry Wash, besides heralding a much needed new-age car wash regime (the water crisis in Hyderabad should be thankful), also offers internships. “My mission in life is to equip and empower. But I do want to expand.” And to that extent, a mobile service is also in the works.

Geospatially Measuring & Modeling an Israeli Archeology
The
non-profit Beit Lehi Foundation was setup in 2005 to "advance the
understanding and awareness of the general public of ancient religious
history associated with this site through scientific research and
education." Because of this mission and recent excavations completed on
the site in 2010, the foundation president, Alan Rudd,Each travelling cable

Utah Valley University (UVU) first got involved with the Beit Lehi, Israel project when Alan Rudd, President of the Beit Lehi Foundation contacted Darin Taylor, then Department Chair for Engineering Graphics and Design Technology (EGDT). Alan learned of the unique skill sets the EGDT students and faculty possess. UVU administration consisting of Ernie Carey, Dean of the College of Technology and Computing, Larry Marsing, Associate Dean of the School of Technology and Construction, and Darin Taylor, Department Chair of the EGDT department visited Israel and the Beit Lehi site at the invitation of the Beit Lehi Foundation to analyze the practicality, cost, and safety of the project for their students and faculty.
During this analysis period Danial Perry, Associate Professor and Licensed Surveyor from the EGDT department, engaged in a conversation with Oren Gutfeld, Chief Archeologist for the Beit Lehi site regarding the possibility of 3D laser scanning in addition to the surface surveying required for the site infrastructure and facilities. Dan has been scanning since 2001 using a Leica GeosystemsTM,Welcome to Find the right laser Engraver or laser cutting machine,Careel Tech supply highest quality products and best service. Cyrax 2500 laser scanner and was familiar with what could potentially be done with archeological sites. Oren became enthusiastic about the possibilities of introducing 3D laser scanning technology to archeology.
Oren mentioned this technology, the conversation with Dan Perry, and the possibilities scanning could provide to Dean Carey, who came home from Israel not only excited about all the wonderful learning and teaching prospects the project could provide but also determined to purchase a 3D scanner for the school and the Beit Lehi project. After approval from UVU was obtained and an agreement made between the university and the Beit Lehi Foundation, Darin Taylor became the project leader who currently sits on the Beit Lehi Foundation board, and Dan Perry became lead surveyor and scanner for the project.
The scope of the project expanded to include not only conventional surface surveying using GPS, Total Stations, and Automatic levels, but also 3D laser scanning using a Leica GeosystemsTM C10. The C10 is used to scan the entire ancient and recently excavated subterranean facilities including the Olive Press, Ritual Bath (Jewish Mikveh), Byzantine Chapel, and Columbarium's (anciently used on this site as a place for the raising of doves and/or pigeons).

Head teacher of meat programs at Hamilton TAFE, McGee trains the budding butchers of the region.

ICS investing in mold texturing
The GF AgieCharmilles laser ablation machine at ICS Laser
Technologies Inc. is one of only two in Canada and just a handful in North
America. But, says ICS President Ian Murray, interest in the technology for mold
texturing is growing in Europe and within the global auto industry.
“It’s just a matter of time until this becomes the process of choice,” Murray said.
Laser ablation uses a pulsed, fiber-optic laser to sublimate material, turning it from solid to gas. It has been used in other industries previously, but AgieCharmilles LLC of Lincolnshire, Ill. — part of Swiss company Georg Fischer AG — expanded it to mold making, using five-axis technology and automation to allow users to achieve up to 50 different layers of texture onto a mold. Traditional chemical etching allows only three to five layers.
The additional layers allow for more detail on the texture, while the digital controls ensure repeatable textures on multiple molds. “Some manufacturers may think that variation is acceptable between components, but it becomes a much more apparent issue when thinking in terms of complex molds that require multiple inserts,” Ledvon said. “In those instances, differences between the various inserts can result in a visibly inconsistent surface across the part.”
ICS brought in its Laser 1000 5Ax machine from AgieCharmilles during the summer and has been introducing it to customers and fine-tuning its operations.
ICS may seem to be an unlikely toehold for texturing technology in the Detroit and Windsor region. ICS is not a texturing company and it is not a toolmaker.In a flattening machine system, steel cables bolted to the car loop over a sheave. But, Murray notes,Laser engravers and purlin machine systems and supplies to start your own lasering cutting engraving marking etching business. the three-man operation has years of experience with laser etching and a reputation as a specialist providing outside services to the region’s mold-making industry.
The firm began as a maker of mold plaques, and now is a laser-etching specialist for finished tools — adding logos and lettering, such as the “air bag” notice on multiple instrument panel molds.
“When I first saw this a year and a half ago, I could see that it was the wave of the future,” Murray said.
ICS is one of the few independent shops in North America offering laser ablation. Texturing specialist Custom Etch Inc. of New Castle, Pa.,Morn series laser engraving and cutting machine, curving machine are widely used in many areas. is another, launching a few months before ICS.
In addition to offering greater detail and more control across multiple molds, Murray noted that laser ablation can more easily mimic real-world textures in its digital brain and replicate that onto steel, aluminum, copper or any other metal mold base. A designer could copy the grain from a favorite leather coat, or the pattern from a wooden plank.
There are differences in the preparation time and the production time, however. Uploading the digital data for a laser ablation texturing could take four or five hours, compared to days of preparation for chemical etching, Murray said. The actual chemical process takes less time in actual production, however.
The machine at ICS is limited to a mold weighing less than 1,700 pounds, although AgieCharmilles sells larger machines.
Murray said he expects traditional mold-texturing operations to invest in laser texturing as the technology moves into more mainstream acceptance and more original equipment manufacturers look to use the system and urge more suppliers to invest in lasers.

ICS brought in its Laser 1000 5Ax machine from AgieCharmilles during the summer and has been introducing it to customers and fine-tuning its operations.
ICS may seem to be an unlikely toehold for texturing technology in the Detroit and Windsor region. The firm began as a maker of mold plaques, and now is a laser-etching specialist for finished tools — adding logos and lettering, such as the “air bag” notice on multiple instrument panel molds.
“When I first saw this a year and a half ago, I could see that it was the wave of the future,” Murray said.
ICS is one of the few independent shops in North America offering laser ablation. Texturing specialist Custom Etch Inc. of New Castle, Pa.,Morn series laser engraving and cutting machine, curving machine are widely used in many areas. is another, launching a few months before ICS.
In addition to offering greater detail and more control across multiple molds, Murray noted that laser ablation can more easily mimic real-world textures in its digital brain and replicate that onto steel, aluminum, copper or any other metal mold base. A designer could copy the grain from a favorite leather coat, or the pattern from a wooden plank.
There are differences in the preparation time and the production time, however. Uploading the digital data for a laser ablation texturing could take four or five hours, compared to days of preparation for chemical etching, Murray said. The actual chemical process takes less time in actual production, however.
The machine at ICS is limited to a mold weighing less than 1,700 pounds, although AgieCharmilles sells larger machines.
Murray said he expects traditional mold-texturing operations to invest in laser texturing as the technology moves into more mainstream acceptance and more original equipment manufacturers look to use the system and urge more suppliers to invest in lasers.

Engineers achieve longlasting goal of stable nanocrystalline metals

student Tongjai Chookajorn, of MIT's Department of Materials Science
and Engineering (DMSE), guided the effort to design and synthesize a
new class of tungsten alloys with stable nanocrystalline structures.
Her fellow DMSE graduate student, Heather Murdoch, came up with the
theoretical method for finding suitable combinations of metals and the
proportions of each that would yield stable alloys. Chookajorn then
successfully synthesized the material and demonstrated that it does, in
fact, have the stability and properties that Murdoch's theory
predicted. They, along with their advisor Christopher Schuh, the Danae
and Vasilis Salapatas Professor of Metallurgy and department head of
DMSE, are co-authors of the paper.
For decades, researchers and the metals industry have tried to create alloys with ever-smaller crystalline grains, Schuh says. But, he adds, "nature does not like to do that. Nature tends to find low-energy states, and bigger crystals usually have lower energy."
Looking for pairings with the potential to form stable nanocrystals, Murdoch studied many combinations of metals that are not found together naturally and have not been produced in the laboratory. "The conventional metallurgical approach to designing an alloy doesn't think about grain boundaries," Schuh explains, but rather focuses on whether the different metals can be made to mix together or not. But, he adds, it's the grain boundaries that are crucial for creating stable nanocrystals. So Murdoch came up with a way of incorporating these grain boundary conditions into the team’s calculations.
Why go to the trouble of designing such materials? Because they can have properties that other, more conventional metals and alloys do not, the researchers say. For example, the alloy of tungsten and titanium that the MIT researchers developed and tested in this study is likely exceptionally strong, and could find applications in protection from impacts, guarding industrial or military machinery or for use in vehicular or personal armor. But the researchers stress that this fundamental research could lead to a wide range of potential uses. "This is one case study, but there are potentially hundreds of alloys we could make," Schuh says.
Other nanocrystalline materials designed using these methods could have additional important qualities, such as exceptional resistance to corrosion, the team says. But finding materials that will remain stable with such tiny crystal grains, out of the nearly infinite number of possible combinations and proportions of the dozens of metallic elements,Learn how flattening machine machines work and how you benefit from it. would be nearly impossible through trial and error. "We can calculate, for hundreds of alloys, which ones work, and which don't," Murdoch says.
The key to designing nanocrystalline alloys, they found, is "finding the systems where, when you add an alloying element, it goes to the grain boundaries and stabilizes them," Schuh says, rather than distributing uniformly through the material. Under classical metallurgical theory, such a selective arrangement of materials is not expected to occur.
The tungsten-titanium material that Chookajorn synthesized, which has grains just 20 nm across, remained stable for a full week at a temperature of 1,100 C—a temperature consistent with processing techniques such as sintering, where powdered material is packed into a mold and heated to produce a solid shape. This means this alloy could easily become a practical material for a variety of applications where its high strength and impact resistance would be important, the researchers say.
