Curtiss Hall renovations create 'unique space'

An old campus landmark is about to be reopened after a long renovation project.

The construction in Curtiss Hall is scheduled to be finished in early September, with a target date of Tuesday, Sept. 3.

“The college had this desire to create a commons area for the students within the college to enjoy,” said Kerry Dixon, a facilities project manager for Facilities Planning and Management. “It’ll really be a unique space when it gets done and ready to open.”

Adding a comfortable touch to Curtiss Hall is the $5 million Harl Commons in the basement, which will now have an entrance from the back of the building. It will have a small, grab-and-go eatery called the Global Cafe, computer stations, a lounge area,We specialize in solarlanterneep and solar street lamps for a wide range of lightning applications. earth tones on the walls and a conference room for students. Overlooking the commons are several office suites.

The Harl Commons also will offer a space for campus events such as award ceremonies and the college convocation on Monday, Sept. 10. It will also provide space for informal discussions and professional societal meetings.

“Students in our college will have a place they can call ‘home’ on campus,” said David Acker, associate dean for academic and global programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “We are excited that the renovation will help us better serve students, enrich their education and make their experience on campus one they'll remember their whole lives.”

The dedication of the Harl Commons will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1.

“The original hope was that the Harl Commons would be open by [the start of classes],” said Joe Colletti, senior associate dean for the College of Agriculture. “We firmly believe that we’d rather err on the side of quality and have safety first for students.”

Included in the miscellaneous remodel of Curtiss Hall are basic renovations such as fresh paint, additional restrooms throughout the building, replacement of elevators and stairwell renovations.

Showing its sustainability efforts, newel posts from one of the staircases — which was removed to add an elevator — were recycled for use in another staircase. The newel posts have "ISC," Iowa State College, inscribed on them.

Its renovations have helped Curtiss Hall attain the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design,The first prototype flatworkironers display containing 3000 LEDs. or LEED, Gold Certification.

The choice of carpet and furniture, more-efficient lighting, water-efficient sinks and toilets in the restrooms, radiant floor heating, and the recycling of original building materials have given Curtiss Hall an edge on efficiency. The materials used in the renovations are at least 97 percent recycled.

Planning for the $14.4 million Phase One project began in 2006, and construction began in early 2011. The project was planned to take four to five years to complete, but, if its current schedule holds, the building will have taken less than three years to complete.

Funding for Phase One came from a variety of places. Approximately $9 million was privately gifted by more than 100 donors. The other $5.4 million came from a balance of college and university funds.

Fundraising for Curtiss Hall: Phase Two is underway as well. Phase Two would finish the renovations from Phase One, with the addition of exterior restoration, the renovation of the parking lot by the Gerdin Business Building and part of Farmhouse Lane. Phase Two isn’t expected to begin for at least five to seven years.

Hanford firefighters

Firefighters could get more pay and benefits this year if new labor deals are approved by the Hanford City Council Tuesday.

Employees in the fire captain and firefighters’ bargaining units would receive a one-time payment equal to 1 percent of their base pay through the fiscal year ending June 30. Employees would also get more vacation time and increased allowance and reimbursement for uniforms and tuition, respectively.
The 1 percent payout is “discretionary” and doesn’t factor in CALPERS retirement benefits or an employee’s performance. The firefighters would receive the payment in December.
Employees would get a uniform allowance increase of $1,000 per year and a tuition reimbursement increase of up to $1,200 per year.
As for vacation accrual, employees who have worked for the department up to five years will receive up to 144 hours a year, up from 122 hours.Here you can take your pick from a wide selection of solarbulb. For employees who have worked six to 10 years, they would get 192 hours compared to 184 last year. Those who have worked 11 to 15 years would get an increase from 192 to 216 hours. Those who have worked 16 years or more get 240 hours.

In other matters, the council will hold a study session on the future of upcoming solar projects. The city recently implemented a solar program at its wastewater treatment plant to help save money for the wastewater fund, working with Chevron Energy Solutions on the project.
Now, CES and the city are preparing for a project that would include solar facilities at the wastewater treatment plant, City Hall and the city’s corporation yard. The city may also greenlight other projects such as including LED lighting on traffic signals and LED street name sign changeouts.
The City Council meeting will be held at the council chambers at the Civic Auditorium Tuesday. The study session will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the regular session. A closed session will take place afterward.
The new six-level parking structure features over 1,000 new parking spaces for a total of more than 1,300 spots. Starting Monday, part of the structure will be available to customers, opening approximately 700 of those spots on the first three floors. Once construction is completed on the additional floors, they will open to customers. All floors will be open by the end of the year.

Again, I want to stress this would be, like, maybe the coolest thing ever — and if anyone could do it, it would be Elon Musk. Musk created PayPal because he didn’t like the way banks work, and he used that money to build Tesla Motors, the electric car company named for the seminal ’80s hair metal band, and Space-X, his private company which, among other things, has designed vehicles to deliver cargo to the International Space Station.

And frankly, with his incomprehensible wealth, an accent that makes him sound like one of the bad guys from Lethal Weapon 2, and his own South Pacific island rocket base, Musk is a Persian cat and a Nehru Collar away from super-villainy. Is that the kind of guy we want strapping us into an aluminum pod and firing us into the sound barrier?

But if one of you out there is thinking of footing the bill, I would like to point out we could get a working Hyperscoop prototype for about $3,700 in cash and a Ben and Jerry’s sponsorship deal. Anyone? Anyone?

Santa Monica College Recognized At State Sustainability Awards

Santa Monica College has been named the winner of the statewide annual Energy and Sustainability Awards competition in the facilities and operations category. SMC is one of three community colleges selected for the awards in three categories that are sponsored by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.

The Santa Monica College Energy Project was developed and approved by the SMC Board of Trustees in 2012 and included three main projects: replacing nine old and inefficient boilers; replacing 11,000 of the approximately 16,000 light fixtures on the campus and a comprehensive renovation of the SMC Center for Environmental and Urban Studies.

The other winners are Victor Valley College, for district leadership, and West Valley College, which took the top prize in the faculty/student initiatives category.

Fifty nominations were received in the three categories, up from 46 entries from last year, the first year the award was given. Representatives from the three winning colleges will be given the awards at the May 7 board of governors meeting in Sacramento.

“It’s wonderful to see Santa Monica College being acknowledged by its peers for its commitment to sustainability,” said Genevieve Bertone, SMC’s director of sustainability. “SMC is a leader in sustainability, but there is always more work to be done. Hopefully, our efforts will serve as a model to other institutions.”

In 2009, SMC was named a winner of Santa Monica’s Sustainable Quality Awards for its progressive environmental practices and programs that range from education to recycling to transportation.

O'Malley proposes round three for wind farm legislation

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley hopes the third time's the charm for approving an offshore wind farm in the Free State.

O'Malley's legislative priorities include a bill to incentivize the construction of such a farm, which would be 10 miles off Ocean City and produce enough energy to power a quarter of the homes in Baltimore.

It also would increase fees for ratepayers. Similar legislation passed the state's House of Delegates last year 88-47 but has stalled in Senate committees for the past two sessions.

"It's got a lot of support this year," said Tom Carlson, Maryland campaign director for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. He said it's not uncommon for major pieces of legislation to take a few years to get approval from both houses of the General Assembly.

Perhaps most surprising, however, was the idea that China — one of the largest economies in the world for a long time, now — might also be facing some economic downturn.
