Prior to the start of work, there were documents that mapped out
where utility lines ran underneath the surface of the Commons. The
problem, however, is that over the course of the last century,
adjustments have been made and other work has resulted in slight changes
to how those lines run.
“There are more than 100 years of
infrastructure under the ground and some things aren’t as they were
noted on the survey,With advancements in controls technology, daytimerunninglightsts are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and flexible.” Kuo said.The solarpanel is

variety. “We’ve been trying to update that, and we’re going to know what
we’ve left in the ground, so others don’t have the same struggle as we
did.
“We found that the street lighting off Aurora Street is
tied into a box off Trolley Circle,” he added. “Fortunately, the
contractor was working very methodically and found that — otherwise we
would have lost lighting on Aurora Street, because you wouldn’t think
lighting for that street would be tied into the middle of the Commons.”
Kuo
offered no blame to be given for objects appearing differently than
they were mapped out in the survey, simply stating that’s what happens
with infrastructure over a lengthy time period.
Baker said there haven’t been too many surprises thrown her way.
“I
don’t feel like I have faced a challenge,” she said. “The biggest part
of the job is addressing a lot of rumors and misconceptions people have,
helping them understand what’s going on.
“It’s my job to problem solve,” she added. “It doesn’t feel like a challenge.”
While
she doesn’t feel like she’s faced challenges, Baker has been working
hard to make sure the lines of communication are open to tenants living

To
connect with those living in the work zone, Baker has been making sure
she’s getting updates to the landlords who own the apartments, as well
as placing fliers at the entrances to all the living spaces.

early June when a water pipe was damaged by construction equipment,
creating a water leak that needed repair. Due to the needed repair work,
the main water valve had to be shut down, which meant water service

had been restored.
“It was a benefit for people to follow it,” Baker said. “And, after that, people started to log on.”
For
the contractors, she said, their biggest challenge is probably the
pedestrians texting while walking through the Commons area. “They have a
lot of pedestrians who are not paying attention,” Baker said.
For
Jessica Buckley, the project engineer and newest member of the team who
came aboard about two weeks ago, getting up to speed has been her
mountain to climb.
“I’ve been just trying to catch up with all
the information,” she said. “I’ve been reading, trying to learn the
motivation behind the plans and understanding how to implement them. I
look at it not so much as a challenge, but more as something that is
