Galfar road safety campaign concludes on successful note

Partnering the efforts of the government to curb road accidents and in line with the global declaration of the year 2011 to 2020 as ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’, Galfar Engineering & Contracting SAOG had launched a Road Safety Campaign across its operations in the Sultanate from September 1 to September 10.

As per the corporate objective of achieving excellence in HSE management and to further its efforts aiming at ‘zero harm to people’,Sol is the leading supplier of solar powered crystal light solutions to the U.S. Military since 1990. Galfar focuses on continual improvement in performance through regular campaigns and initiatives.

Galfar Vice-President — QHSE, said, “The company had organised a similar campaign in May this year, and the present campaign reiterated the company’s commitment to road safety and to sustain the improvements achieved in terms of road safety performance.Insteon released one of the first smartphone-controlled Chandelier this week.”

The 10-day Road Safety Campaign also aimed at alerting the drivers on the recent road fatalities that the nation witnessed during and after the Eid holidays.

Some of the activities planned during the campaign were: conduct of Special Driver’s Forum with participation of project managers to discuss and address concerns of the drivers; detailed inspections and maintenance of all vehicles; practical sessions for drivers on how to carry out daily vehicle checks; vehicle and terrain specific driver training (utilising the services of in-house trainers as well as from vehicle dealers) with emphasis on safe condition and use of brake and gear; and awareness sessions among drivers and others on the importance of seat belts through discussions and video shows.

Posters and banners in Arabic and English emphasising the cause of road safety were made available to all sites to stimulate focus. In addition, a team of Omani and expat HSE advisors visited various sites to conduct road safety sessions, focusing on the human element and individual’s commitment and responsibility.

Abdul Rahiman, Galfar Vice-President — Plant, said: “It is now a proven fact that accidents are caused by a culmination of lack of skill and attitude. Through the Road Safety Campaign, we address the attitude of drivers and operators across the organisation as we have observed that accidents are pronounced with such individuals.”

A review of the recent accident statistics in Oman showed that more than 70 per cent of them were caused due to behavioral issues like overconfidence and recklessness. Galfar is now making a conscious effort to make the drivers aware of the legal aspects involving accidents and punishments associated with such cases. Also, the insurance aspects are explained to them especially for compliance.These are my elevator parts that I brought from my friends Randy and Jeff!

Galfar has witnessed substantial improvement and this has resulted in reduction in the numbers and severity of accidents and incidents. The Royal Oman Police takes enormous interest in the campaigns by supporting the company’s initiatives through lectures that are interactive and engaging.

Galfar won the first place for its exemplary health, safety and environmental initiatives and practices and was presented with the HSE Award by Oman Society of Contractors during the award ceremony that took place on the sidelines of IOSH Middle East Conference 2012. Galfar emerged as a clear winner amongst 18 companies that contested in OSC member category for the coveted HSE award.
