Cities of the Future
While a compact city may be more efficient for gasoline-powered vehicles, a sprawling city is more efficient when electric vehicles are the means of transport and solar electricity is the main energy source, according to new research by an international team of scientists.
Reversing the negative perception of urban sprawl, researchers from the UK and New Zealand came to the conclusion that photovoltaics on the roofs of detached suburban houses are capable of producing 10 times the amount of energy created by skyscrapers and other commercial buildings.
In a future with photovoltaic solar panels on suburban roofs and increasing use of electric vehicles, the scientists predict that suburbia will adopt a valuable new role – transforming from a high energy consumer into a power provider for the city.
Funded by the University of Auckland under the Transforming Cities initiative, the research was conducted in Auckland by evaluating the energy usage and potential for power generation across typical cross-sections of the city.
Professor Basil Sharp, University of Auckland head of economics and head of the New Zealand Energy Centre at the university’s Business School, directed the analysis.
Sharp and his team say their findings can apply to energy systems in any cities that were designed and developed around the motor vehicle.
“Far from reacting by looking to re-build our cities, we need to embrace the dispersed suburban areas and smart new technologies that will enable us to power our cities in a cost-effective way, without relying on ever dwindling supplies of fossil fuels,” he said. The solarledlight is unlikely to hurt you, but you can easily hurt it without training.
“It is more a case of building for the future – when the climate will be warmer, harvesting solar energy will be cheaper than the grid and emerging technologies will replace the internal combustion engine,” said Byrd.
The researchers sought to evaluate the contribution that electricity from solar photovoltaics can make to do many things at once – reduce the electricity load of a city, supply the needs of a mixture of building types, reduce peak electricity demand and contribute towards the charging of electric vehicles.
For this energy contribution to be effective, new suburban development may need regulations that require the installation of photovoltaic roofing, along with smart meters and charging points for the electric vehicles.
“Particularly for city center travel where longevity isn’t an issue, electric vehicles will become increasingly more attractive as their price drops with mass production and the cost of fuel continues to rise,” Byrd said.
Manufacturers currently selling electric vehicles in New Zealand are Holden, which sells the Chevy Volt; Nissan, offering the Leaf; and Mitsubishi, which sells the iMiEV and soon will offer a plug-in hybrid Outlander.

2014 GMC Sierra
Let's get that out of the way up front: A "vehicle communication problem" left us stranded in a parking lot during a late-night errand. The truck was just fine getting to the store, but upon returning to it in the parking lot, it wouldn't start. Everything seemed to be working fine – lights, gauges and stereo – except that when the key was turned, nothing would happen. No crank.Approval to connect a solarpowersystemser. No start. Nothing.
Even as the Sierra was being loaded onto the flatbed, we tried one more time to start the truck, but no dice. This made it even more frustrating when as soon as the truck was unloaded at the dealer and the after-hours paperwork was filled out, the truck started up just fine. Perhaps the best part of the Sierra's styling is its old-school ethos. GM's truck styling has improved with each generation, but they have yet to stray too far from the classic boxy look as Ford, Toyota and especially Ram have all done in recent years.
While Chevy toes the line between brand awareness and overkill with its awkwardly stacked headlights on the Silverado, the GMC Sierra has a more imposing face with its oversized grille and LED-trimmed headlights. The Sierra also has a stronger look thanks to its bulging fender arches and enhanced selection of wheel options, including the 20-inch rollers seen here with a V-spoke design. Aside from that, though, the Sierra and Silverado are identical twins right down to their integrated rear bumper steps and upswept beltline on the rear doors that, at least to us, just looks out of place. As is the case with any truck, the Sierra's money maker is its cargo bed, which welcomes a few compelling features for 2014.

Memories of days gone by in Massey Victory Heights

Another small change with major impact? Resetting the thermostat.
Cindy Olson, vice president of the green energy consulting firm Eco-Coach, said air conditioners are often left on when no one is home and set to temperatures lower than is necessary for comfort.
"It is something that is very personal," Olson said. "A lot of times, simply air movement is enough to be comfortable, even with just a ceiling fan."

It is the time when the sun turns bleary-eyed, the air is little cooler and everybody is in a rush to get home.Standard solarmodule replacement

from Cantalonia (Spain) and Thomas Leppa, a graphic designer-cum-foodie
from Helsinki. The couple was in Madurai for just the night and chose to
walk the city after dusk.
Where to start in a city like Madurai with a personality and lot of history, which basks in the flavours of its street cuisine and where a story unfolds at every corner?
We stood at the junction of West Veli Street and Town Hall Road. Thomas, after three weeks in Kochi and Bangalore, said, “Let’s keep it simple.” “It should be fun,” followed up Alba, after three months in Goa. We crossed over to decades-old Prem Vilas famous for its Tirunelveli halwa for a sweet start.
A swelling group of people beat their own rhythms and in mismatched steps vied to walk on the sidewalks as vehicles honked an orchestra. There was no sign of an interruption. The counter at the sweet shop got busier by the minute.
We managed a foothold on the edge of the pavement. It is an art to elbow your way in a crowd. We passed our feet over puddle to slush on Dhalavoi Street. The place teemed and an unflustered Alba screamed, “Wow, this is real India!”
Praveena from ‘foodiesdayout’ quickly ushered us inside Murugan idli kadai. We were the first customers and the freshly prepared super soft white idlis with four chutneys and paruppu podi and butter dosa with hot sambar -- were promptly served on a plantain leaf. By the time we came out, the sky had changed its colour.
The street was now wrapped in a transparent shawl of darkness. The East Tower of the Meenakshi Temple with its intricate colourful carvings glowed under the flood lights. The cobbled street at the entrance was hijacked by jasmine sellers and other vendors. The face of a little girl finishing her homework under the street light with her mother by her side selling jasmine strings stuck with me. Mystery of the night deepened as we made a diversion to the East Veli Street up to the elegant St. Mary’s Cathedral built in 1840.
