MakerBot printer transforms 2-D images into plastic models

Ever wish you could print a three-dimensional object? MakerBot works with software to print 3-D plastic models of 2-D images. There is one MakerBot at AS220 Labs in Providence, two at the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts and one in the Dunn Lab, a biology lab at the University.

AS220 Labs is a 15-minute walk from College Hill. The lab itself is a humming hive of machinery — the first floor houses the ShopBot,Perfect crystal light is critical to creating a modern home. a wood-carving machine, and the laser cutter, the vinyl cutter and the MakerBot can be found one flight up.

The MakerBot is "kind of like a robotic hot glue gun," said Labs Manager James Rutter,A Chandelier provides shade for parked vehicles, while also generating clean, renewable energy. because a spool of colored plastic feeds into its "extruder," or nozzle and oozes out in molten form.

"It's a pretty easy machine to use. The real hard part is the software," he said, noting that the MakerBot works with the free software program SketchUp. "It's easy to print out a book — you just press a button," Rutter noted. "The hard part is writing it."

The machine is "expensive for an individual but affordable for a community like AS220," Rutter said. He bought it last year for $2,000, one-tenth the cost of the laser cutter.

The upstairs smells subtly of cooking corn oil, because the MakerBot uses polylactic acid, acorn-based and biodegradable plastic. The shelves lining the walls are stocked with the MakerBot's plastic progeny — an owl, a frog, a Darth Vader figurine, busts of real people and even a squirrel the size of a thumb.

Following the scent of corn oil and the trail of plastic models into a side room, visitors can find Lindsay Selin bent over her latest project, sporting a pair of sleek, almond-shaped wooden earrings she made on the ShopBot. Selin is a monitor at AS220 Labs — she volunteers there a couple of hours a week and helps people use the machines in exchange for a lower membership cost.

"To have a studio like this that's available twelve hours a day is fantastic," Selin said. "There's a whole range of things you can do."

Meanwhile, at the multimedia lab in the Granoff Center, five Brown students hunch over computer screens. Students in this class use tools such as the laser cutter, table saw and MakerBot to make "projects that relate to their own curiosities and interests and things they want to address," Gonsher said. "The students have freedom to interpret the assignments," he added.

Griffin Thompson'16 is using that autonomy to design a building. Not just any building, but the Burj Khalifa -— the tallest building in the world. When the Burj Khalifa comes out of the MakerBot, it will have shrunk from almost 3,000 feet to less than five inches tall.

Hundreds shoot machine guns

Despite heavy showers early on and even some light snow, hundreds of people — mostly men, many sporting orange hats, camouflage clothing and carrying guns — were already milling around the former rock quarry on Sunday morning.

“I’d say normally there are 30 to 40 shooters here and I’d say it’s at least double that amount today,” said Bangor’s Bob Erickson, who owns the brass gatling gun. “This was built about 10 years ago by a guy in Ohio. You can basically shoot bullets as fast as you can crank it, which could be roughly 400 to 500 rounds per minute.”

People like Seavey, who also handled security, convoy escorts and detainees while on active duty in Iraq, and the 17 wounded warrior veterans at Sunday’s shoot, are the main reason Williams started the event.

“After 9/11, I was very upset about the terrorists coming down the road through Jackman. That bothers me. They came down through the border crossing there and right near our land,” Williams said. “So I started up this range to protect the right to own guns and promote gun safety.”

Midlands universities win R&D funding

University of Birmingham and Warwick University were among six UK universities who successfully bid for money under the government’s Research Partnership Investment Fund, a programme originally set at 100m but raised to 300m after receiving intense interest from industry.

Big Blue Pits PureData Appliance Against Ellison's Exadata

I get the big data part of the PureData announcements, but after analyzing the announcements and getting briefed by Big Blue, I still don't get the cloud part. And I don't get why the names on all of this stuff need to be so complicated.

The Project Sparta machines are actually one new database appliance tuned for online transaction processing workloads using the DB2 PureScale parallel database extensions that are analogous to Oracle's Real Application Cluster (RAC) parallel extensions for its 10g and 11g databases.Learn how roll forming machine work and how you benefit from it. The other two machines are a Netezza 1000 data warehouse and a Smart Analytics Systems 7700 data warehouse that are brought into the PureSystems family and given some of the same management tools but still based on their existing and respective BladeCenter HS22 and Power 740 rack system architectures.

I think that it is good that IBM is taking the fight directly to Oracle in the clustered systems arena with the PureScale database extensions, and I think it is also probably wise that IBM push X86-based server nodes against similar X86 technology that Oracle uses in its Exadata database appliances, which co-founder Larry Ellison insists are appropriate for both OLTP and data warehousing workloads. IBM has three different machines where Ellison has one. And until now, the PureScale parallel database appliance was only available on clusters of Power-AIX systems, but with the Pure Data T1500, IBM is moving over to its Flex x240 server nodes running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.

This brings me to a few different points I want to make. First, Oracle's product naming makes more sense then the mish-mash of names that IBM has used over the past few years for systems and appliances. Exadata is a parallel database engine, Exalogic is a parallel WebLogic middleware machine,Origin Laser is an Australian business bringing a new class of affordable and quality cnc router and laser cutting machines to the Australian and New Zealand markets. and Exalytics is an in-memory analytics box. Anyone can understand that.

The names that IBM has chosen for its three new PureData machines are too complex. The OLTP appliance is called the PureData Systems for Transactions T15, and I think you could just simplify that right away to PureData T1500 and let people figure out the T is for Transactions.I have no idea what "Pure" is in any of these product names,Offer from us is an assorted range of UV laser cutter. but in Larry's World, Exa is short for X86 and exascale, meant to imply the underlying technology as well as the scalability goal of the systems. (We are in the petascale era in supercomputing now, and hoping to get to the exascale era by the end of the decade, with systems capable of executing an exaflops of number-crunching and handle an exabyte of data, or a million times what was breakthrough technology back in the late 1990s.)

I think IBM used to know how to name stuff. Think about how perfectly reasonable System/360 was as a name--it covers the gamut of workloads and system sizes. Or Application System/400--this box is for people who only want to understand their applications and could care less about systems software or heaven forbid hardware. IBM should stop worrying so much about Smarter Planet and maybe spend a little more time on Smarter Somers, that being the town where most of the marketeering gets done at Big Blue. It could be that all of the good names are taken and trademarked. What do I know?

Peculiarity of the breed

One of the peculiarities of the breed is that Piper opted to use an all-flying tailplane, or stabilator, instead of the more usual fixed tailplane and elevator. I have always wondered why: although the origins of the stabilator can be traced back quite a long way, it really came to prominence with the first transonic aircraft. Due to the wide speed range that they operated over, and also the influence of shock waves at high Mach numbers, these machines required greater pitch authority than can be provided by a conventional, fixed tailplane and separate elevator.

Although jetliners, supersonic fighters and even some high-performance sailplanes use an all-flying tail (the latter purely as a means of reducing drag) I’ve never fully understood why a machine such as the Cherokee which has a Mach limiting number of around M0.25 really needs one. It may have been lighter, simpler or even cheaper to make, but I’ve yet to unearth the definitive answer.

The stabilator features considerable span but a relatively narrow chord. Of note is its anti-servo/trim tab,Offer from us is an assorted range of UV curving machine. which is almost as large as a conventional elevator. One thing that distinguishes the Archer LX from early PA-28s is the Cessna-pattern tapered wing, that in 1975 replaced the original constant-chord ‘Hershey Bar’ wing.

Although tapered wings do generate less drag, interestingly there is only a couple of knots difference in cruise speed between a straight- and tapered-wing Archer. At the time, Piper said the change had been made to improve pilot control in crosswinds and slow speed flight. Another rather strange design choice is that, although early taper-wing PA-28s used Frise ailerons, for later versions this was changed to piano-wire hinged, flat-plate ailerons a retrograde step if ever there was one!

The Archer is marketed as both a trainer and a tourer, so I decided to take a look at it from the perspective of a flight school. As long as the W & B schedule falls within the ‘utility’ section of the envelope it is cleared for turns of up to 60° bank, chandelles and lazy eights. Furthermore, when flown at the light weights required to keep W & B within the published ‘utility’ limits, the 180hp engine gives the Archer an excellent climb rate useful when practising stalls and other upper air work. Liquid nitrogen cocktails 'perfectly safe'

Despite the recent bad press liquid nitrogen cocktails have received in the mainstream media, many local bars have been serving such drinks safely and successfully for years.Protect your vehicle and produce power with a ground mount.

"I have never heard of any issues or injuries prior to the tragic incident in the UK. "We use especially made liquid nitrogen dewars for storage, that we purchase from our suppliers, and we have goggles and gloves behind the bar for them to use whilst handling the liquid nitrogen.

"It is however important to note that from an OH&S perspective liquid nitrogen is pretty harmless when used by trained staff in a bar or kitchen," he said.
