Call it a woman-to-woman trade mission. Karen Mills, head of the U.S.
Small Business Administration, stopped in Sacramento Tuesday to tour
McWong International Inc., which recently expanded into new Natomas
headquarters, thanks to a $2.8 million SBA loan.
Her host:
Margaret Wong, president of McWong International,Specializing in the
production Cut to length line, leveling machine, cold roof panel machine
and other products. a longtime U.S.-China exporter specializing in
energy-efficient lighting systems, who's been touted by presidents,
governors and mayors alike for her entrepreneurial efforts.
Standing
next to a warehouse table of LED sensors and lighting components in
McWong's 50,000-square-foot building, Mills lauded Wong as a "serial
entrepreneur," who's grown her manufacturing and export business with
the help of three SBA government-backed loans over the last 10 years.
The company also develops waste-water treatment systems designed for
Chinese cities.
Although SBA loans were Topic A, both women took
the occasion to tout "insourcing," the return of jobs - particularly
manufacturing - back to the United States from foreign countries. "The
notion that manufacturing is dead in in this country is false,Tabletop

Wong
said her company is starting to bring some of its Chinese-based

"The
timing is perfect for us," said Wong. "China's costs are rising, U.S.

overseas in China. "The comparisons are very encouraging ... we are
moving forward to expand our assembly and manufacturing in Sacramento,"
Wong said.
Wong's SBA loan is one of three she's tapped in the
last 10 years to expand her 25-person company. In the Sacramento region,
SBA loans topped $226 million as of August 31 this year, which is still
below their prerecession high of $407 million in 2007. Nevertheless,
Mills said the lending environment is improving and the SBA is "pleased

"Our
job is to put the wind at your back," said Mills, whose Northern
California tour included a Walnut Creek company that installs roof
mounts for solar systems.
McWong's headquarters, purchased last
December, consolidated the firm's former offices and a warehouse

Mills' visit was
partly to pump up the Obama administration's efforts to help small
businesses. She touted the SBA's efforts to "streamline and simplify"
SBA paperwork by deleting 100 pages of loan requirements. She also cited
the administration's efforts to get a six-year extension of an SBA
"innovative research" program that provides $2.5 billion for companies
like McWong to apply for research funding.

2012 PLASA Awards for Innovation Announced
The PLASA Awards for Innovation, sponsored by AED Rent and
Lighting&Sound, were presented at the PLASA Show in London yesterday
evening, along with the announcement of the prestigious Gottelier
Award.
During the show’s opening two days, 47 products were judged ‘live’ in front of a crowd of show visitors and camera crew by an independent panel of expert judges who toured the show floor to view each product presentation.This is an unique design of flattening machine for flattening of circular plate.
John Meyer of iconic pro audio brand Meyer Sound was honoured with this year’s Gottelier Award in recognition of his life as one of the pioneers of the modern sound reinforcement industry.
Eight Awards for Innovation were presented – including a final Gold Award for Innovation – along with a special Award for Sustainability.
Nominees are asked to demonstrate a new style of thinking, an improvement in technical practice, an aid to safety, energy-saving or sustainability benefits, or new technology, materials or techniques.
Stageco for the Arena Lift – of which the judges said: “It’s very safe and saves a lot of time. Increases options for touring shows and lets more shows play more venues. Very well thought through and very well implemented.”
Digital & Future Technologies for the Super Twofer. The judges commented: “Why hasn’t this been done before? It’s a game changer.This is an unique design of flattening machine for flattening of circular plate. It’s packaged really well, so they’re instantly useful.Fluid Industries manufacture and sell curving machine.”
Tait Technologies for the Pixel Tablet. The judges said of this: “It’s absolutely stunning.Laser Cut Studio is a brand new cnc router company and new way of thinking. It’s the ultimate in audience participation.Laser markers specifically designed for high speed laser marking machine, laser engraving, and laser ablation.”
Avolites for the Sapphire Media Infinity Video Control System – of which the judges said: “It’s the first integrated video control surface dedicated to video. It’s well thought through and well designed.”
Robe for the Robin DLF Wash. The judges comment on this was: “It’s an LED wash light that behaves like a traditional Fresnel. It will fit straight into the lighting tool box and we can use it. The internal barn doors are exceptional. Beautiful colour mixing, looks like a generic wash light – but it’s LED.”
Harman International for the JBL VTX V25 Line Array with D2 Dual-Diaphragm Driver Technology. “It addresses a lot of the traditional problems with loudspeakers by addressing the problems at the driver engineering level,” the judges said.
And the final trophy this year – the Award for Sustainability went to ETC – for the Source Four LED. This, the judges said, “enables us to put professional quality stage lighting into naturally ventilated spaces. It has a highly efficient optical system and you can reuse existing lens stock.”
The judges considered this year’s crop of products to be particularly strong, and found themselves with the difficult task of reducing an initial shortlist of 19 leading contenders down to the final list of trophy winners. Among those which didn’t make the final cut were four products which the judges felt deserved a special Commendation: these were Sennheiser’s 9000 Series digital wireless radio microphone system; Shure’s ULX-D digital wireless radio microphone system; the Wentex Pipe & Drape System from Highlite International, and the d3 Designer from d3 Technologies.

Galfar road safety campaign concludes on successful note
Partnering the efforts of the
government to curb road accidents and in line with the global declaration of the
year 2011 to 2020 as ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’, Galfar Engineering
& Contracting SAOG had launched a Road Safety Campaign across its operations
in the Sultanate from September 1 to September 10.
As per the corporate objective of achieving excellence in HSE management and to further its efforts aiming at ‘zero harm to people’,Sol is the leading supplier of solar powered crystal light solutions to the U.S. Military since 1990. The 10-day Road Safety Campaign also aimed at alerting the drivers on the recent road fatalities that the nation witnessed during and after the Eid holidays.
Some of the activities planned during the campaign were: conduct of Special Driver’s Forum with participation of project managers to discuss and address concerns of the drivers; detailed inspections and maintenance of all vehicles; practical sessions for drivers on how to carry out daily vehicle checks; vehicle and terrain specific driver training (utilising the services of in-house trainers as well as from vehicle dealers) with emphasis on safe condition and use of brake and gear; and awareness sessions among drivers and others on the importance of seat belts through discussions and video shows.
Posters and banners in Arabic and English emphasising the cause of road safety were made available to all sites to stimulate focus. In addition, a team of Omani and expat HSE advisors visited various sites to conduct road safety sessions, focusing on the human element and individual’s commitment and responsibility.
Abdul Rahiman, Galfar Vice-President — Plant, said: “It is now a proven fact that accidents are caused by a culmination of lack of skill and attitude. Through the Road Safety Campaign, we address the attitude of drivers and operators across the organisation as we have observed that accidents are pronounced with such individuals.”
A review of the recent accident statistics in Oman showed that more than 70 per cent of them were caused due to behavioral issues like overconfidence and recklessness. Galfar is now making a conscious effort to make the drivers aware of the legal aspects involving accidents and punishments associated with such cases. The response has been so overwhelming that the public and the mall owners have cajoled them into extending the show to Monday, said Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command, Air Marshal Rajinder Singh.
Fighter aircraft models greet you at the entrance. Youth gawk at the plane models; older men and mothers with young children join the line to sit at the fighter plane simulator, Drona. “I want to feel what it is to be in the cockpit,” a young girl was overheard saying.

Colleen, who admits to a certain fanaticism about getting colors right, was in charge of painting - and often repainting - areas that needed brightening and lightening. Her mother's old sewing machine and cedar chest occupy an upstairs room, with Colleen's christening dress hanging nearby. Her architect father's elegant watercolors are now in prominent places. And resting on an antique school desk in a hallway is a license plate from her home province that also happens to come from the year Colleen was born.

Her finds for the dining room include a sturdy oak table that can easily accommodate 10, with Amish chairs, and a chest that might have come from an Amish barn but was actually found new at a local discount store.

A favorite hangout for the couple's three dogs, gentlemen Foster and Ben and spirited Katie, is the side yard where the Gradys have created a retreat, complete with Adirondack-style chairs and an old baby bathtub that serves as a distinctive flower pot - or ice holder - when they entertain.
As night falls, the trees in the couple's yard become nocturnal showpieces. Mark has outlined them in blue and amber lights that add a magical quality to the property. Enjoying the glow on a recent evening were Foster, Ben, and Katie, frolicking in their illuminated playground.

Whether you're arriving on Downtown's doorstep
through the Fort Pitt Tunnel or enjoying a ballgame and hot dog at PNC Park, the
view of Pittsburgh's skyline never ceases to amaze.
But what about the view from the skyline? Along with PG photographers, I took to the rooftops and decks of some of Pittsburgh's most prominent buildings to find out what the city looks like from up there. While most of these perches are open only to owners, tenants and their guests, a few are open to the public and one might be someday. Until then, enjoy a bird's-eye view of the 'Burgh from some high places:

Now combining a parking garage, office space and apartments, the building's 14th-floor deck has the only rooftop swimming pool in Downtown. Tenants who go for a relaxing dip can also peer down at Pittsburgh's jammed streets and bustling sidewalks.
The views get even better as you go higher. Residents on the Allegheny River side of the building have breathtaking views of the Allegheny and the North Shore and lucky end-unit tenants can see Downtown as well. A past tenant of the 24th floor enjoyed his view of PNC Park so much that he put in steel bleachers and an indoor batting cage. Needless to say, he was the most popular guy in the building on game day.
In 1932, Gulf Oil Co. and New York architects Trowbridge & Livingston debuted a 44-story skyscraper that at 582 feet high, was the tallest building in Pittsburgh uProtect your vehicle and produce power with a Book scanner.ntil 1970. At its top was a system of colored lights that forecast the weather for the next day. Gulf sold the building after its 1984 merger with Chevron Corp. In July, owner Rugby Realty unveiled a system of energy-saving LED lights that not only forecasts the weather, it celebrates national holidays and local sporting triumphs.
Though no longer open to the public, the tower's deck wraps around the entire building and once featured coin-operated binoculars. Today, the Gulf Tower's deck looks up at BNY Mellon Center, PPG Place and the 64-story, 841-foot U.S. Steel Tower, where David Bear and Carnegie Mellon's Studio for Creative Inquiry hope to one day create a visitor's center called High Point Pittsburgh.
When you walk out on Fifth Avenue Place's green roof, you have to remind yourself that you're three stories above the middle of Downtown.
Installed by Highmark in 2008, the living roof is made up of 180 tons of growth media and 25,000 plants, with sedum, aster and daylilies among the most prolific. Instead of adding to storm sewers' overflow during a torrential downpour, it uses most of Pittsburgh's 37 average inches of rainfall per year to sustain its own existence. The layer of growth also acts as insulation, helping to keep the building cool during the summer and warm during the winter. Flanked by Penn and Liberty avenues, the roof provides some great street perspectives, as well. These views are not routinely enjoyed, though, as it is off-limits to both employees and the public.Sol is the leading supplier of solar powered crystal light solutions to the U.S. Military since 1990. It can only be seen by those in nearby buildings.

Orbital Drilling enables “one-up assembly”
Orbital Drilling, a technology
patented by Novator AB , is based on rotating a cutting tool around its own axis
and simultaneously around an offset center axis. Thus, the cutting tool can move
simultaneously in an axial direction to drill or machine a hole and navigate
horizontally (like a router tool) to machine an opening or cavity larger than
the tool’s diameter.
By calculating an offset, and moving the spinning tool in a circular motion, a single cutting tool can be used to drill holes of any diameter larger than the tool’s diameter. This can substantially reduce cutting tool inventory and tool changeover frequency. Orbital Drilling units with CNC-controlled offset make it possible to drill a complex-shaped hole and perform finishing operations with the same diameter tool and setup. Thus, the need for specific tools for additional tasks is greatly reduced because Orbital Drilling also can be used for adaptive stack drilling, cutting returns, countersinking and reaming.
According to Eleanor Merson, Sandvik Coromant’s Sheffield, U.K.-based R&D manager,Quite a bit ago I was able to get my first vacuum Forming machine up and running,Leading the industry in professional roofing machine and safety equipment. this technology also offers dust-free drilling, which is important for hollow components made from several different pieces. Such modules are assembled, then drilled and machined. With Orbital Drilling, a vacuum system can be linked to the back end of the tool to remove the dust, which eliminates disassembly and reassembly for cleaning.
This is reportedly not possible with traditional drilling tools because there is not enough open space to create a vacuum. Orbital Drilling also produces a sickle-shaped end cap,LaserSharp rollformingmachinechina and systems offer custom converting and processing solutions for packaging. which gets broken off and sucked away, compared to a normal drill’s smaller circular end cap,The roll former are mainly used in steel structure industry. which typically falls into the assembly.
Aircraft manufacturer Airbus (Toulouse, France) reportedly increased its annual flap assembly rate from 30 to 300 units on its A321 by using an automated riveting of closed structures (AROCS) machine with an Orbital Drilling end unit that drills through both the flap skin and frame components in a single pass, without having to disassemble it for deburring and cleaning. Subsequently, Airbus adopted Orbital Drilling for flaps on all its commercial aircraft models.
Novator CEO Hans-Petter Andersson adds that Orbital Drilling enables “dry drilling” using air cooling to eliminate the need for liquid coolant: “Not only is this more environmentally friendly and cheaper (no cleanup), it is also much safer for the operators.Offers Engraving Machines and Laser Cutters including Laser engraver and Engraving Equipment for plastic and wood.” Andersson lists several current case studies. Six portable Orbital Drilling units are used today on The Boeing Co.’s (Seattle Wash.) 787 Dreamliner wing-to-body (WTB) fairing, and another 59 will be delivered in 2012, with the aim of using only this type of machining on the WTB fairing’s CFRP/titanium stacked construction. Bombardier also will use Orbital Drilling on the CFRP/titanium WTB fairing of its CSeries passenger jets when production commences.
